Uneeda Burger

There’s something about wrapping your hands around a burger that’s just good for the soul. It’s like a double fisted reminder of your humanity – a gut bomb wakeup call that you are the master of your own destiny, at least for the next few minutes.

However, not all burgers are created equal. Dry meat is an instant buzz kill. Bland toppings turn a potentially great moment into a ho-hum ordeal. Big price tags make me a bit squeamish. (We’re talking about burgers!) And, an uppity “dining room” gives me cause to flinch.

Burgers are best reserved for boots and jeans. They are the kind of meal meant to be eaten with your hands. You don’t want to be worried if a bit of special sauce winds up on your nose. Your cheek. Your elbow. (It happens. Don’t judge.) 

 

This is why a joint like Uneeda Burger is something you keep tucked in your back pocket. Like the aunt you visit for a pick-me-up, Uneeda doesn’t disappoint. Its patties are juicy. Its toppings are unctuous. And, its price point won’t cause you to do a double take. (Unless of course you’re considering the Medi-terra. We’ll come back to that in a second.)

Housed in a former garage, Uneeda’s not fancy. Think cement floors, metal chairs, and help-yourself water stations. Located in Fremont, it offers a bit of the hipster vibe, in the best sense. The staff’s energetic and passionate about their menu. They are quick to offer suggestions, answer questions, and at times provide small beer samples to undecided patrons.

At the center of it all are burgers. Served up without the fuss of sides (those are ordered separately), these babies come topped with goodies like sautéed porcini mushrooms tossed with black truffle salt (Crimini Mushrooms $9) or roasted chili relish (Sonora $8.75).

I’m a sucker for all things runny-yolk, so it’s hard to go wrong when you add a sunny-side up egg to a perfectly cooked patty (Madame $9.5). And, all things caramelized onion and blue cheese make me giddy (Caramelized Onions $8.5).

Those not worried about their wallet will be amazed by the flavor bomb that is the Medi-terra. This lamb burger is topped with charred peppers, tempura lemons, and arugula. (Unfortunately, it comes in at a whopping $13.50.)

The steal of the deal is the classic burger, a slightly smaller patty that is adorned with special sauce ($5). It’s not going to blow your mind, but it will satisfy.

I find the sides are take or leave. Unless of course you’re going for the poutine – fries topped with a beefy gravy and cheese sauce ($4).

So there you have it. Uneeda’s not new news. But it’s definitely worth a reminder that this joint’s dishing up patties you’ll devour for a price that’s easy to swallow.
