About Me

Hi. I’m Mikaela Cowles. I like good food, love to cook, prefer sunrise over sunset, think bouquets of fresh basil are better than flowers, and won’t give up turning a page for a Kindle’s convenience.

How did I get here? After finishing my undergraduate degree at St. Mary’s College of California (SMC), I handed in my basketball jersey for a pen and paper. Staying at SMC, I went on to get my MFA in Fiction Writing. It was one of the most amazing, unexpected, and definitely unplanned experiences in my life. While in grad school my passion for writing grew like I never believed possible. Since graduating, I started my own freelance writing business, Making Language Count, LLC. Every day I get to do something I love. Life doesn’t get much better than that, does it?

Baguette Taste – Wonder Bread Budget is a combination of my passions. In college and grad school, my friends and I worked really hard to stretch our thin wallets. We still do.

From the grill, to stove, to oven, and cutting board, I revel in finding new ways to make what I like to eat, while keeping cost to a minimum.

The newest addition to my blog is Saturday Steals: Seattle to San Francisco. It’s an inside look at enjoying restaurants cheaply and discovering good entertainment deals. One of my best friends, Jujus, and I will share our fabulous finds as we continue to explore our two cities.

I’d love to hear about good deals you find, your inexpensive twists on recipes or other fabulous facts about life.

If you want to know more about my writing business, please click here. It’s a pleasure to share my work with you. I hope you’ll say hello.

  2. Wow. This looks amazing. Got the blog information from another Junior Leaguer in Seattle. Looking forward to seeing the whole site and see more postings.

  3. Great blog Mikaela. Good luck in the job search. I plan to try a recipe or 2. I am at the stage where I am pretty tired of my own recipes

  4. OK. Maybe I’m just hungry, but these recipes sound delicious and so easy! Grilled watermelon…what a great concept and lettuce wraps are always the best. So refreshing. I expected just a few recipe choices but you have created quite a repertoire. I can’t wait to try some. A whole new reason to open my email.
Thanks, Mikaela, for the inspiration. Ann

    • It seems I’ve done a terrible job of “comment moderation.” Thank you Angela. That’s an incredibly flattering comment coming from someone so talented.

  16. Hi Mikaela. I love your blog. You are an amazing cook and I love how creative you are. My son is starting his 2nd year of his Masters for creative writing in the fall. He’s done a couple conferences this year. He just loves it. I always tell my kids do what you love. Kudos to you for finding your passions in life.

      Halley –

Wow! Your post got shuffled into my spam box (I imagine because of the .eu on your url). What a small world! Don’t you just miss SMC like crazy?
