There was one Seafair Friday, I couldn’t have been older than 10, when my mom and I got stuck on the 520 floating bridge. The Blue Angels were practicing.
At the time, my mom was driving a blue Suburban – the huge boxy kind that looked more like a tank than a car. Even though the bridge wasn’t closed, it might as well have been. Traffic wasn’t moving an inch. Why I didn’t think to crawl up on the top of that old monstrosity, I don’t know. Instead, I hung my little body out of the window. The planes ripped over us. They whipped the air into my eyes. It felt like their engines were revving inside my chest.
Still, that vibration makes me feel like I’m eating forbidden fruit, like my whole body is tingling and I just need a second to catch my breath.
This year will be my second Seafair out on the water and, of course, I need to be prepared. Here’s the menu lineup so far:
Panzanella Salad (This bright, vegetable packed salad only gets better with time. Plus, it packs a carb punch perfect for a day filled with libations.)
Green Pea Salad (It’s hard to go wrong with bacon anything.)
Spam Sushi (This is one everyone will love as long as no one knows what’s in it.)
John Dalys (Compliments of my brother Casey, whos throws down something tasty no matter where he goes.)
Any additional suggestions or recommendations? There’s still time to add a few more goodies to the list!
